Great Restaurant in Fredericksburg

October 9th, 2012 by Lynn MacWithey

After 18 years as innkeepers, our favorite restaurant is still Mamacitas.  Located just two blocks from the Pacific War Museum, they serve great Tex-Mex, steaks, and fried shrimp.  You wouldn’t ordinarily order American food at a  Mexican food restaurant, but you can’t beat their steaks and shrimp – Caesar salad and sides included – for under $20.  Constant tea, chip, and salsa refills, and a roving manager make all the right ingredients for a pleasant, affordable dinner!  Don’t forget the great Margaritas too!  Das Garten Haus guests always enjoy it!

Great Dining!

September 30th, 2009 by Lynn MacWithey

When we moved here 15 years ago, there were not a lot of choices for fine dining.  Fortunately, Das Garten Haus now has quite a list of favorite Fredericksburg restaurants – and trying them out on a continual basis is a perk of innkeeping! Most innkeepers are foodies.   As I continue with this blog, I will mention some of our favorite places, and some of the more innovative things they do, as well as special dining events.  This week I want to feature Cabernet Grill (formerly Cotton Gin).  Last night we had the pleasure of dining at one of their Vintner’s dinners – featuring wines from Pedernales Cellars, and Singing Waters Vineyard.  Both vineyards paired their lovely wines with shrimp and oysters, spareribs, salmon, and beef tenderloin.  Cabernet Grill will do several of these events during the year and they are really excellent!  They are done midweek, and feature 5 courses paired with 5 wines for $59.95 per person.  You do not go home hungry!  You can see how chef Ross Burtwell kicks it up a notch on these fun evenings.  Don’t miss dining there at any other time as well – their food is excellently prepared and moderately priced. The menu features a wide variety of choices, and they feature an all Texas wines, wine list.  Try the catfish – you will never think about it the same again.
