March 26th, 2013 by Lynn MacWithey

After 19 years in business I have finally published my cookbook – all the breakfast recipes plus a few, great family recipes that have stood the test of time – about 42 recipes in all. Most guests are picking one up when they stay with us, so “From Our Table to Yours” I hope all our guests at Das Garten Haus enjoy it!

Great Restaurant in Fredericksburg

October 9th, 2012 by Lynn MacWithey

After 18 years as innkeepers, our favorite restaurant is still Mamacitas.  Located just two blocks from the Pacific War Museum, they serve great Tex-Mex, steaks, and fried shrimp.  You wouldn’t ordinarily order American food at a  Mexican food restaurant, but you can’t beat their steaks and shrimp – Caesar salad and sides included – for under $20.  Constant tea, chip, and salsa refills, and a roving manager make all the right ingredients for a pleasant, affordable dinner!  Don’t forget the great Margaritas too!  Das Garten Haus guests always enjoy it!

Wildseed Farms in the Texas Hill Country

July 13th, 2010 by Lynn MacWithey

Wildseed Farms is located just seven miles east of Fredericksburg, and is open seven days a week for your perusal.  Visit the center in spring when the largest growers of wildflowers have their fields in bloom,  then spend time in the Market Center browsing, and of course you can pick up some wildflower seeds.  There are walking trails and a butterfly exhibit, as well as an outstanding nursery.  All our overnight  guests end up spending a couple of hours there – it is a diverse and entertaining experience!

Farmers Market in Fredericksburg Texas

June 8th, 2010 by Lynn MacWithey

Quite a selection!

Every Thursday afternoon from 4-7 PM, Fredericksburg hosts a Farmers Market

in our downtown square.  What a great reason to visit the Texas Hill Country on a weekday this summer! Smaller crowds and uncrowded restaurants  make weekdays an ideal time to visit.  Come stay with us and we’ll send you peach picking and to the market for food and fun!  Enjoy just picked produce, grass fed beef, Dorper lamb and homemade breads!

Pacific War Museum – George Bush Gallery Reopening

December 8th, 2009 by Lynn MacWithey

The newly expanded George Bush Gallery of the Pacific War Museum has reopened.  Yesterday, December 7, 2009, approximately 5000 people attended the ribbon cutting with guest of honor, George H.W. Bush.

George and Barbara greet the crowd of 5000 guests.

George and Barbara greet the crowd of 5000 guests.

I took a quick tour and it is an amazingly comprehensive museum. Done chronologically, and by battle, it is modern, interactive, and a testament to our veterans and those who sacrificed their lives.  It is a must see – no where else in the United States is there a place like this.  You can easily spend a day or more there.  It will even keep your teenagers occupied for hours – and they need to see this.  Stay at our bed and breakfast in Fredericksburg, just a half mile from the museum, and consider coming during the week when crowds are smaller and you can take your time.

Great Dining!

September 30th, 2009 by Lynn MacWithey

When we moved here 15 years ago, there were not a lot of choices for fine dining.  Fortunately, Das Garten Haus now has quite a list of favorite Fredericksburg restaurants – and trying them out on a continual basis is a perk of innkeeping! Most innkeepers are foodies.   As I continue with this blog, I will mention some of our favorite places, and some of the more innovative things they do, as well as special dining events.  This week I want to feature Cabernet Grill (formerly Cotton Gin).  Last night we had the pleasure of dining at one of their Vintner’s dinners – featuring wines from Pedernales Cellars, and Singing Waters Vineyard.  Both vineyards paired their lovely wines with shrimp and oysters, spareribs, salmon, and beef tenderloin.  Cabernet Grill will do several of these events during the year and they are really excellent!  They are done midweek, and feature 5 courses paired with 5 wines for $59.95 per person.  You do not go home hungry!  You can see how chef Ross Burtwell kicks it up a notch on these fun evenings.  Don’t miss dining there at any other time as well – their food is excellently prepared and moderately priced. The menu features a wide variety of choices, and they feature an all Texas wines, wine list.  Try the catfish – you will never think about it the same again.

Holiday Season Events and Decorations

September 24th, 2009 by Lynn MacWithey

Keep the dates of December 4 and 5 in mind for the new St. Nikolaus market followed by the grand opening of the new edition of the National Pacific War Museum on December 7th. For your shopping pleasure, this market will feature artists and Christmas crafts from local merchants as well as invited artists from all over Texas.  This season will unveil a nearly 3 story German Pyramid being commissioned now in Germany to be on display on our Marketplatz all during the holiday season.    Right after that weekend will be the grand opening of the new George H. W. Bush Gallery – an expansion of the National Museum of the Pacific War.  This should be a spectacular event still in the planning stages, but it’s not too early to book a room at our Fredericksburg bed and breakfast.  It is sure to be memorable, with George H.W. Bush as the guest of honor.  Don’t miss the lights in Johnson City as the Pedernales Electric Cooperative lights up their properties with millions of Christmas lights – it’s truly glorious to see and lights up the sky for miles!  And remember, all these sights may be seen on weekdays as well, and with smaller crowds.
